Be realistic

I have always wondered the difference between Idealism and Realism. Does that mean going with the flow versus digging a right path? Accepting things the way they are (giving up) against doing something about stuff that matters? If there is a possibility for the right path, an idealistic approach, it never occurred to me why we needed realism. Why it didn't? Because I wasn't observing the little things around.

When a woman screams of the horrible queue maintenance in a shopping mall, about how it had to be dealt well by the management in peak times, why did I get irritated? She is speaking of the idealistic scenario. She might be the one that goes in search of a guy to take care of the line. But in contrast, I was delighted at the woman who helped the lady behind her not lost by the cutters. She was not patient either, pushing off crowd and cursing now and then.

It became ultra clear when I saw this movie "Vedam". The director is a philosopher. His movies stand out with lot of fodder for the brain. Anyways, movie shows a character trying to sell off her kidney to repay a debt relieving her family from bond labour. She had to pose as a relative to the people who are buying the kidney, in the hospital. The heart wrenching part, the money gets stolen after she struggles twice to get her act right and goes through the surgery. Lets take a step back and look at the story. Director is the God for the characters in the movie. Ideally, he could get the mediators working in the kidney racket to be jailed and bond labour person brought to the court. However, the lady being able to correctly pose as a relative in front of the doctor, the money being brought back by the thief and the money lender letting go of the papers, impressed by the intellect of a small boy actually bring joy to the viewers. For me, this is realism. Its not about giving up, but living.

Any science student understand the conditions real and ideal. Ideal is spoken of for simplicity and refinement. Yet, it is never 100% attainable. We push towards it and being real is what gives the energy to do so. Ideally, women should never be violated, irrespective of the circumstances. Being realistic is carrying pepper spray or a pocket knife. Ideally, education institutions need to be more answerable to students. Being realistic is guiding juniors for the better use of resources and processes. While I can never stop being idealistic, I did come to appreciate realism for the remarkable human element.
