Controversies and Social Media
Well, where do I even start? I
made the biggest mistake so far in my life with internet. That had tortured my
mind till late hours yesterday night. I struggled to rectify it but apparently
I could only not repeat the same. There is no silver lining whatsoever, or a
learning to take out of it as well. Only a victim, my mental peace. I tried to
understand a controversy. You know reading about it, views from everyone else
“relevant” and pondering over my own understanding of the situation. Thank god
I did not analyse minute details or try to give a meaning to my society based
on the same. I promised myself this would be the last time I am ever getting into
the internet controversies. It was more than my little mind could take. It is
the biggest of the film industry, well actually just top of the mind right now
for Indian Bollywood followers.
What’s perplexing me is that why
would everyone want to react about it? Have a view of the same? I could see
that I was not alone in following up the controversy. People are so brave out
there to say anything, actors to activists, critics to journalists, home makers
to corporate leaders, students to senior citizens. Use of appropriate language
is not a concern at all in many of the cases, no one, whatever may be their
profession, no one had to act (tweet/post/blog/video) responsibly, everyone
feels that they have all the facts to give a conclusion, taking side was the
goal and the ultimate aim discrediting the opposite side (sides which you do
not know at all), picking on every little angle (seriously age, slight change
in timelines, facial expressions as proofs?), never asking the right questions
and the ultimate discussion of moral grounds. Wow! Even for a person like me who
has an opinion on anything to everything, I find this repulsive. Who’s with me
in saying your comments out loud in a crowd equivalent to the audience you got
on social media?
How does everyone finding time to
think about stuff that doesn’t matter? It seems like an escape from actual
problems in life, we would not want to think about. Well for people seem to
want to influence through social media, is there any reason to believe people’s
belief systems are molded by what goes on the Facebook wall or twitter feed?
I found people looking for reinforcement of what they actually believe already. Isn't that how Facebook algorithm works? And what’s your level of seriousness, when you have actually found substantial time
to spend on a place where anyone can say anything.
As far as the controversy goes,
all I have to say for the lady, “Sach ke aas paas wala jhoot pakadna mushkil
hai” and for the gentleman, “Why? Why? Why?” for all that has been done and
said. But yes, another minute of my life, not wasting on this
" Who’s with me in saying your comments out loud in a crowd equivalent to the audience you got on social media? "
ReplyDelete- I partially disagree. One reason why people tend to be more vile and outspoken in social media is that there is anonymity in social media forums which is not there in a crowd. Facebook & Twitter(not sure about this) have settings to your stop friends from getting notifications when you comment. So a foul comment on a newspaper article or a random group has a good chance of going unnoticed by his/her family member or friend in a position of condemning it. People are using this uninhibitedness of sorts to spread negativity.
"I found people looking for reinforcement of what they actually believe already. Isn't that how Facebook algorithm works?"
- I agree. The recommendation engines of Facebook & Twitter & Youtube are providing suggestions based on the user's inclination on a particular subject rather than providing a balanced view on the subject. This is a great cause for concern as it is creating more polarization in the community. For example, it has given rise to the ultra-right & ultra-left leaning sub-communities in Indian social media.
"Sach ke aas paas wala jhoot pakadna mushkil hai"
- I agree. I feel "Sach ke aas paas wala jhoot" is the main cause for the propagation of fake news in India. At the wake to recent mob lynchings resulting from the propagation of fake news, lets see what measures our govt. takes to curb its propagation and how effective they turn out to be.
